The Spinning Journey of Our New Yarn

Creating a new yarn is a fascinating process, one that combines tradition, craftsmanship, and a deep understanding of fiber. Our latest blend—Polwarth, Exmoor Blueface, and Silk—is brought to life by the skilled hands at John Arbon Textiles in Great Britain. Their expertise in small-batch, sustainable spinning ensures that every step, from blending to skeining, results in a yarn that is both beautiful and functional.

Step 1: Blending the Fibers

The journey begins with carefully mixing the raw fibers to create a perfectly balanced blend. Polwarth adds softness and bounce, Exmoor Blueface brings strength and durability, and silk enhances drape and stitch definition. The fibers are evenly distributed into a blended top, ensuring consistency in both color and texture.

Step 2: Spinning the Singles

Once blended, the fiber top is drawn out and spun into singles—fine strands of yarn created by twisting the fibers together. The amount of twist is carefully controlled to balance strength with softness, preserving the airy, lightweight feel of the wool while maintaining durability.

Step 3: Plying for Strength and Structure

To create a well-balanced yarn, two or more singles are twisted together in the opposite direction—this is the plying process. Plying not only strengthens the yarn but also enhances its elasticity, stitch definition, and resistance to wear, making it a joy to work with.

Step 4: Skeining and Finishing

Once plied, the yarn is wound into skeins, ready for their final finishing. Washing and setting the twist ensures the yarn blooms, relaxes, and reveals its full texture. This final step makes the yarn easy to work with and prepares it for the hands of crafters.

The result? A beautifully spun yarn that is soft yet strong, full of life, and ready to be transformed into stunning projects. Stay tuned as we take the next step—natural plant dyeing with Seiden-Atelier Frei in Switzerland!
